Miller, who calls his distinct fusion of Native American music and rock "Altered-Native," walked away with trophies for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best/Folk-Country Artist, and Best Male Artist. Close behind Miller was Indigenous, a group made up of four siblings from the Yankton Sioux tribe in South Dakota, who grabbed nods for three awards, including Best Pop Artist/Group and Best Blues/Jazz Artist. Other notable awards included Joanne Shenandoah, who won for Best Female Artist; Tom Bee, the owner and founder of SOAR records (the "red Motown" as he calls it), who took home lifetime achievement honors; and Robbie Robertson, who won for Record of the Year (Contact From The Underworld of Redboy). Indigenous The award ceremony, now in its second year, took place at the Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque, N.M. To honor the occasion, the mayor of Albuquerque proclaimed the 6th of November "Native American Music Awards Day."
