Bill Miller Receives Four Native American Music Awards
Nov 8, 1999, 2:25 pm PT

Bill Miller
Nashville-based singer/songwriter Bill Miller was the top winner at the 2nd
annual Native American Music Awards in Albuquerque, N.M on Saturday (Nov.
6). Miller, who calls his distinct fusion of Native American music and rock
"Altered-Native," walked away with trophies for Artist of the Year, Song of
the Year, Best/Folk-Country Artist, and Best Male Artist.
Close behind Miller was Indigenous, a group made up of four siblings from
the Yankton Sioux tribe in South Dakota, who grabbed nods for three awards,
including Best Pop Artist/Group and Best Blues/Jazz Artist. Other notable
awards included Joanne Shenandoah, who won for Best Female Artist; Tom Bee,
the owner and founder of SOAR records (the "red Motown" as he calls it), who
took home lifetime achievement honors; and Robbie Robertson, who won for
Record of the Year (Contact From The Underworld of Redboy).
