Indian Protest Group Asks Legislature for Help with Claim

The Associated Press

(Pierre-AP) -- Members of a protest camp near Pierre renewed their
opposition today to a proposed transfer of land along the Missouri River.
They told an interim legislative committee it's another treaty violation
involving land that belongs to all Sioux Indian tribes.

The deal would give the state, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the
Lower Brule Tribe about 159,000 acres of shoreline taken to build the
Missouri River reservoirs. It was approved on the federal level. Committee
members said they understand the Indians' concern, but that they as state
legislators have no power to change or repeal federal law.
