Subject: More Lies and Broken Promises

Hau Kola,
My friends, I have waited for my anger and disappointment to subside before
sending out this letter of update on the Erwin Mascot situation.
First of all let me refresh your memories of the agreement made by the
Buncombe County School Board and the Dept. of Justice.
In March of this year the board made the agreement with the DOJ to remove the
word Squaw from all view in all of the school and after a walk through by a
qualified Native American person all Images that could be found offensive by
public display to Native People be removed permanently from the Buncombe
County Schools. The school would be allowed to keep their outside statue and
Totem Poles. Also they would be allowed to keep the word Warrior as their
school mascot. (sic)
All of this was to be completed prior to the starting of the 99-00 school
year. As promised the S***** word was removed from the outside of the school
and from the Highway Sign and also removed from the gym floor in 97 prior to
this agreement. But is still being displayed in pictures hanging on the gym
walls.
Just for clarification this removal was done after the complaint was made to
the school in Nov. Of 96 and you will see that in the report by DR, Jace
Weaver that principal Mal Brown made a false statement to Dr. Weaver about
the time frame of this word removal.
Dr. Weavers report can be viewed in its entirety by going to
www.main.nc.us/wncceib/jaceweaverreport.htm
I strongly suggest that you print out this report and use it as a reference
to bring to your school officials as a document that has been recognized as
accurate by the US Dept. of Justice This may help in convincing members of
any school officials that may be on the fence in making their decisions.
You will note on DR. Weavers report the date it was completed was Aug.
30.1999. We received a copy of this report last Thursday Nov. 11 1999 They
only reason we even received this report is because we had to write to the
School administration and request it as it became a public document as soon
as the school had received it. This, by the way, is true of all information
sent to the schools that it become a matter of public record. And if you have
actions towards any public school they cannot withhold information that you
request.
As you will see in Dr. Weavers report his walk through was completed and his
report to the Dept. of Justice was that he viewed so many items and murials,
plus logos and other items such as letter heads and cups and Tee-shirts all
being considered offensive to Indian People. His report not only pointed out
the items but he thoroughly explained why with each item it would be
considered offensive.
In Dr. Weavers own words he referred to the school creating a "Hostile Racial
Environment" the very same words that the Dept. of Justice used as a
foundation to bring this case against the Buncombe County School System in
the first place.
The schools reaction to this report was "We want a second opinion." Which in
our understanding they are not only not going to live up to the agreement
made in writing with the Dept. of Justice but will continue till they find
some Apple that will walk through the school saying everything is all right
and they can continue the Racial Environment that exists in their school?
One of the school board members interviewed on local TV stated" He, (Dr.
Weaver) just found Too Much!" Maybe the reason he Found Too Much is because
you don't want to admit just how offensive that school really is and the
school officials want to continue to hide their heads in the sand and maybe
these Indians will just go away.
We are asking you that you visit our web site and use the links to email or
write to the School administration to let the know that they have made an
agreement and to live up to it.
I understand somewhat how the ancestors must have felt when so many treaties
were made by the dominant society than ,"They Changed Their Minds" and did
not honor the words which they had signed their names to.
I am sorry I have not been able to forward much of the mail I have been sent
but now I have upgraded my computer to handle, hopefully without the
mistakes, being caused by my old system.
I ask that you forward this email on your mailing lists and keep the circle
growing.
Stand Tall and Walk Proud.

In Spirit;
