Between others, there are several reasons, specially for newbies: 

- You can see where the device is installed and you can easy use this 
information in visual or command-line interface actions and commands 

- There are lots of Howtos, guides and so on that ask the user to find a 
determinated device / mount point.

- My Huawei E220 installs three devices. Which of them (appears two icons in my 
desktop ) can one use as modem ? ( this is /dev/ttyUSB , but I cannot see the 
mount point in Nautilus).

It would be a good usability advantage.
