Since it looks like I've got some time this spring break I decided to
go ahead and look at this patch. I've got a lot of notes and I've
started to work on a branch locally to clean up various parts of it. I
think there is still work to do, however it is good news that it
already works, so we have a baseline for getting it cleaned up for
merging.

I'll play around with my branch some more before I post the notes and
maybe try to push the branch somewhere so whoever else wants to work
on it can lend a hand, but it's looks pretty encouraging.
