Biblical Qualities of
Forgiveness
(Psa 86:5-6 KJV)
For
thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive;
and
plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon
thee.
{6} Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the
voice of my supplications.
FORGIVE
1. To pardon; to remit, as an offense or debt; to
overlook an offense, and treat the offender as not guilty. The original and
proper phrase is to forgive the offense, to send it away, to reject it, that is,
not to impute it, [put it to] the offender. But by an easy transition, we also
use the phrase, to forgive the person offending.
(Gen 50:17-21 KJV)
So shall ye say
unto Joseph,
Forgive, I pray
thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee
evil:
and now,
we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father.
And Joseph wept
when they spake unto him.
{18} And
his brethren also went and fell down before his face;
and they said,
Behold, we be thy servants.
{19} And Joseph
said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?
{20} But as for
you, ye thought evil against me;
but God meant it
unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people
alive.
{21} Now
therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little
ones.
And he
comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.
(Exo 32:32-33 KJV)
Yet now,
if thou wilt forgive their sin--;
and if not, blot
me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
{33} And the
LORD said unto Moses,
Whosoever hath
sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
(1 Ki 8:33-36 KJV)
When thy
people Israel be smitten down before the enemy,
because they
have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee,
and confess thy
name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house:
{34} Then hear
thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel,
and bring them
again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers.
{35} When heaven
is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee;
if they pray
toward this place, and confess thy name,
and turn from
their sin, when thou afflictest them:
{36} Then hear
thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel,
that thou teach
them the good way wherein they should walk,
and give rain
upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an
inheritance.
(1 Ki 8:38-40 KJV)
What prayer and
supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel,
which shall know
every man the plague of his own heart,
and spread forth
his hands toward this house:
{39} Then hear
thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do,
and give to
every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest;
(for thou, even
thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)
{40} That they
may fear thee all the days that they live
in the land
which thou gavest unto our fathers.
(1 Ki 8:46-50 KJV)
{46} If they
(thy people) sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,)
and thou be
angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy,
so that they
carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;
{47} Yet if they
shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives,
and repent, and
make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives,
saying,
We have sinned,
and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;
{48} And so
return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their
soul,
in the
land of their enemies, which led them away captive,
and pray unto
thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers,
the city which
thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name:
{49} Then hear
thou their prayer and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling
place,
and
maintain their cause,
{50} And forgive
thy people that have sinned against thee,
and all their
transgressions wherein they have transgressed against thee,
and give them
compassion before them who carried them captive,
that they
may have compassion on them:
(2 Chr 6:18-21 KJV)
But will God in
very deed dwell with men on the earth?
behold,
heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee;
how much
less this house which I have built!
{19} Have
respect therefore to the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O LORD
my God,
to hearken
unto the cry and the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee:
{20} That thine
eyes may be open upon this house day and night,
upon the place
whereof thou hast said that thou wouldest put thy name
there;
to hearken
unto the prayer which thy servant prayeth toward this
place.
{21}
Hearken therefore unto the supplications of thy servant,
and of thy
people Israel, which they shall make toward this place:
hear thou from
thy dwelling place, even from heaven;
and when thou
hearest, forgive.
(2 Chr 7:13-14 KJV)
If I shut up
heaven that there be no rain,
or if I command
the locusts to devour the land,
or if I send
pestilence among my people;
{14} If my
people, which are called by my name,
shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face,
and turn from
their wicked ways;
then will
I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their
land.
(Psa 25:16-20 KJV)
Turn thee
unto me, and have mercy upon me;
for I am
desolate and afflicted. {17} The troubles of my heart are
enlarged:
O bring
thou me out of my distresses.
{18} Look upon
mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins.
{19} Consider
mine enemies; for they are many;
and they hate me
with cruel hatred.
{20} O keep my
soul, and deliver me:
let me not be
ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.
(Psa 86:3-7 KJV)
Be
merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.
{4} Rejoice the
soul of thy servant:
for unto thee, O
Lord, do I lift up my soul.
{5} For thou,
Lord, art good, and ready to forgive;
and plenteous in
mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
{6} Give
ear, O LORD, unto my prayer;
and attend to
the voice of my supplications.
{7} In the
day of my trouble I will call upon thee:
for thou wilt
answer me.
(Isa 2:7-12 KJV)
Their land also
is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their
treasures;
their land
is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:
{8} Their land
also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands,
that which their
own fingers have made:
{9} And
the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth
himself:
therefore
forgive them not.
{10} Enter into
the rock, and hide thee in the dust,
for fear of the
LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.
{11} The lofty
looks of man shall be humbled,
and the
haughtiness of men shall be bowed down,
and the LORD
alone shall be exalted in that day.
{12} For the day
of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty,
and upon every
one that is lifted up;
and he
shall be brought low:
(Dan 9:17-23 KJV)
Now
therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications,
and cause thy
face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake.
{18} O my God,
incline thine ear, and hear;
open thine eyes,
and behold our desolations,
and the city
which is called by thy name:
for we do not
present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses,
but for thy
great mercies.
{19} O Lord,
hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do;
defer not, for
thine own sake, O my God:
for thy
city and thy people are called by thy name.
{20} And
whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my
people Israel,
and presenting
my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;
{21} Yea, whiles
I was speaking in prayer,
even the
man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the
beginning,
being
caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
{22} And he
informed me, and talked with me, and said,
O Daniel, I am
now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
{23} At
the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth,
and I am come to
show thee; for
thou art greatly beloved:
therefore
understand the matter, and consider the vision.
(Mat 6:12-15 KJV)
And
forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
{13} And lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
For thine
is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
{14} For if ye
forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
{15} But if ye
forgive not men their trespasses,
neither will
your Father forgive your trespasses.
(Mat 9:4-8 KJV)
And Jesus
knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?
{5} For whether
is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?
{6} But that ye
may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins,
(then saith he
to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine
house.
{7} And he
arose, and departed to his house.
{8} But
when the multitude saw it, they marvelled,
and
glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
(Mat 18:21-22 KJV)
Then came Peter
to him, and said,
Lord, how oft
shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
{22} Jesus saith
unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times
seven.....
(Mat 18:33-35
KJV) Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy
fellowservant,
even as I
had pity on thee?
{34} And his
lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors,
till he
should pay all that was due unto him.
{35} So likewise
shall my heavenly Father do also unto you,
if ye from
your hearts forgive not every one his brother their
trespasses.
(Mark 11:24-26 KJV)
Therefore
I say unto you,
What
things soever ye desire, when ye pray,
believe that ye
receive them, and ye shall have them.
{25} And
when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any:
that your Father
also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
{26} But if ye
do not forgive,
neither will
your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
(Luke 6:35-37 KJV)
But love ye your
enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again;
and your reward
shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the
Highest:
for he is
kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
{36} Be ye
therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
{37} Judge
not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be
condemned:
forgive,
and ye shall be forgiven:
(Luke 17:3-4 KJV)
Take heed to
yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him;
and if he
repent, forgive him.
{4} And if
he trespass against thee seven times in a day
, and seven
times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent;
thou shalt
forgive him.
(Luke 23:33-34 KJV)
And when they
were come to the place, which is called Calvary,
there they
crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the
left.
{34} Then said
Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they
do.
And they
parted his raiment, and cast lots.
(2 Cor 2:5-11 KJV)
But if any have
caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part:
that I may not
overcharge you all.
{6} Sufficient
to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
{7} So that
contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort
him,
lest
perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch
sorrow.
{8}
Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.
{9} For to this
end also did I write,
that I might
know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
{10} To whom ye
forgive any thing, I forgive also:
for if I forgave
any thing, to whom I forgave it,
for your sakes
forgave I it in the person of Christ;
{11} Lest
Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his
devices.
(1 John 1:8-10 KJV)
If we say
that we have no sin,
we deceive
ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
{9} If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,
and to cleanse
us from all unrighteousness.
{10} If we say
that we have not sinned,
we make him a
liar, and his word is not in us.
