5) Computing Tips (Windows)

Quick Access to Favorite URLs (I.E.)
If you have a long list of links running across your links bar and down the right side of the IE screen, you can access them quickly by clicking on the double arrow on the far right of the links bar. Then just press the letter on your keyboard that matches the link name you want.

Optimize Virtual Memory (XP)
Click "Start," "Control Panel," "Performance & Maintenance." Click "System" and check how much RAM you have under the "General" tab. Now click the "Advanced" tab. Under "Performance" click "Settings." Click "Advanced," tab. Under "Virtual Memory" click the "Change" button. Make both the "Initial Size" and "Maximum Size" 2.5 to 3 times the size of your RAM memory.

Help Speed Up XP (XP)
Turn off Windows indexing function to open and close programs and files quicker. Go to the start menu button, select "Control Panel," then "Performance and Maintenance," then "Administrative Tools," then the "Services" shortcut and finally, highlight "Indexing Services" and select "stop". Doing this will slow searches for files on your computer, but it's easy to undo, just follow the same steps and select "start".

Before You Install Windows XP Service Pack 2 (XP)
Install, update and run spyware removal software. Update and run your anti-virus software. Update your firewall software. Check with your computer manufacturer for the latest upgrade to your Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) or System Setup File. Back up or make a copies of files you can't replace. What Are My Internal and External IP Addresses? (XP)
Click on "Start," "Run," then enter "command" and hit OK. Type in "ipconfig" without quotes and hit enter. This is your internal IP address. Click on the following link to find your external IP address. http://www.whatismyip.com/
