Just for a data point, my machine for 4 years was a P3 800 with 512MB of
RAM, and I never had any problems with it. But I don't use any of the IDE's
either, rather I simply used Emacs and Ant.

It doesn't work with Mozilla 1.7 either.... I though Mozilla and FireFox

That's one of the things the NIO package solves.

java.nio.channels.Selector (see select())
java.nio.channels.SelectionKey

Of course this means you'll have to use SocketChannel instead of just
Socket.

Well.. I know there's a tutorial on IBM's Developerworks site called
"Building a Java Chat Server" which would give you a demonstration on
what you want (I think). Unfortunately, when i went to their website
to get the exact URL, it was down (I have an interest in reading it

You can also take a look at the XPath API. To find:
<nx:test name="joe"/>

just use //nx:[EMAIL PROTECTED]'joe'] or such.

Or, you can look at the Velocity Templating Engine:
http://jakarta.apache.org/velocity/index.html

I forgot, XSLT would do it nicely as well.

I don't thnk XPath is quite what I want. I took a look a Velocity its
closer to what I want.

Maybe I didn't explain my problem well enough.

In my ContentHandler when I come across a nx namespace tag I will look
up the corresponding java Class and call an execute method. That method
may goto a db and look stuff based on the parameters in the tag,
perform biz function, etc... I know how to do that.

What I don't know is how to collect the rest of the HTML around my nx
tags and also add that to the output.

Don't know off the top of my head, but you could take a look at

TOPIC: Proper use of assertions
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/comp.lang.java.programmer/browse_thread/thread/349a64607cc9a990
==========================================================================

== 1 of 3 ==

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Razvan)

Hi !

        Take a look at the following code:

public class AssertTest
{
        private y;

        private void doSomething(int i)
        {
                assert (i < 100) : i = i % 100;
                y = i;
        }
}

        The question was whether the above code makes proper use of
assertions. I answered 'yes', but the right answer was 'no' because of
the fact that the assertion has side effects. Indeed the variable 'i'
is modified inside the assert but why should this be inappropriate ? I
mean the program will end ANYWAY when the assertion is fired, so why
care if 'i' is modified or not before that ?

        And what if this is what the developer really wanted to do: display
modulo of 'i' when i was bigger than 100 then end the application ?

        Maybe the creator of the test assumes that the Error AssertionError
is caught somewhere ? (but to catch an AssertionError is a stupid
thing to do anyway)

Razvan

I agree with the right answer. You may have a great proof that when
everything is done as you expected, the assignment makes no difference.
Nevertheless, writing the above is at a minimum confusing and likely to
create fragile code that can break easily.

That said, the apparent intent of the question is to check whether you
realize that the latter expression will not be evaluated when assertions
are disabled. The code would only make sense if you were to assume that
the assignment happens when assertions are not checked (hence bringing
the argument into range). That doesn't happen, so the code is
nonsensical and confusing.

Incidentally, this narrowly skirts another reason why the use of
assertions is inappropriate. The assertion above checks a precondition,
and precondition checks should generally throw IllegalStateException or
IllegalArgumentException, not fail an assertion. Because the method is
private, though, the method is part of the implementation detail of the
class, and it's more acceptable to assert preconditions on the method.
Just don't extrapolate the same approach to a published API.

You mean, like terminating the program if the assertion fails, and changing
a variable's value as it does?

> Indeed the variable 'i'
> is modified inside the assert

The example isn't a very good one, because the variable is local, but the
principle is to avoid any side effects, otherwise the assertions become
themselves a source of errors.

> but why should this be inappropriate ? I
> mean the program will end ANYWAY when the assertion is fired, so why
> care if 'i' is modified or not before that ?

There are much better examples. I think this one was meant to show the
principle, without a particularly bad result.

> And what if this is what the developer really wanted to do: display
> modulo of 'i' when i was bigger than 100 then end the application ?

The basic idea is to strictly avoid side effects in assertions so that the
program will run exactly the same whether or not assertions are enabled.
Otherwise the debugging usefulness of assertions is eroded (because the
assertions become a source of errors).

It is always possible to argue that a particular outcome is harmless, but
the tutorial purpose is met -- avoid side effects, even if there are no
obvious consequences.

If the user reached a page by following a link, web browsers
traditionally set the "Referer" header to the URL of the previous page.
You can retrieve the value of this header from ther ServletRequest.
However, the information in that header is provided voluntarily by the
browser, and if the browser doesn't give it, then you can't retrieve it.

If you're intending to use this for navigation within your web
application, then it would be better to explicitly store any information
you need, whether in hidden form fields, session attributes, or
whatever.

That's what it was looking like to me. Thanks for confirming what I was
thinking.

Amanda Walker first noted that there was a Bruce Burhans living in
Bellingham, Washington and Bruce himself filled in the details.

       Yes, in a way its the same person. Bruce is a disabled fellow who
acts as our gateway onto the Internet, and we all post under his name when
using that account.
        He has no idea where we actually are, or how the
rest of the link is configured. If anyone ever hassles him,
the link would just vanish as if it never was.
        Then it would appear again from a different place
and use *that* person's identity. Several people are
already well-prepared to take on the job. As you can
probably imagine, computers are big among the dis-
abled, and they are relatively immune to harassment and
prosecution........

        The only thing from your world in ours is this interface. The only
other communications option would
be to use an even more destructive network, the road
system.

        And quite reasonable. Although I don't know the
people of Bellingham, your statements about the hypocrisy of most
self-styled progressives in the Industrial-Capitalist-Empire (ICE) are
certainly right on.
        They just refuse to accept that the environmental
problem is systemic, rather than managerial, which is
why we are doing what we are doing.
        To our knowledge, ours and 2 other groups have
the only real environmentalists in the ICE. And we all
have to hide.........

    I am an Earthling...........I *used* to be an American,
before I realized that it was a criminal institution...
    (and until I found a way to live without being a part
of it......)

    In order to forestall the utterly predictable and oft-repeated lame
accusations about me being a part of
your civilization because I am using a computer connected
to the Internet, I will point out that I own approximately
1/300 of this machine, and that it is the ONLY thing
in our world , OUR country, that comes from yours....

Then next you are going to say that because these
messages enter the Internet from from an address on
Vallette St in Bellingham WA (I forget the house number, but it is in the
phonebook, I think) where Bruce Burhans lives, that I/WE must be that
person at that address....

Please feel free to drop by and talk to him....You can
also talk to the government people that watch his place
round the clock, hoping that one of us will be stupid enough to actually go
there.....You see,  the route these
messages take, to and from us and Bellingham, changes
all the time, and even the government can't track us from
there to here electronically.....Yes, the system was setup
and is overseen by a master hacker......

Not only that, but even if they could, they would just find
several people camping out in the middle of what YOU
call a National Forest , perfectly legally, playing headgames on the
Usenet.(etc).......The area where we live is a LONG way from here.....

But even with helicopters I don't think they could nail us.
Part of the team is always on watch and we have a
dozen hiding places and escape routes planned out, and
very good smoke-screens at the ready....

I tell you this truthfully: You can stick your laws and
your Constitiution right up your criminal hypocrite ass...

They mean NOTHING to us......And you can't make
us join you because you can't FIND us.......

Why hasn't Mr. Burhans been busted? The last time
they busted our gateway, it just moved to his place...
We have MANY supporters among you......

And he is the ONLY clue they have to our whereabouts...

So kiss my ass, why don't you?

    Well. It looks like I may owe you an apology. I've
been so often attacked on this group that I have come
to expect it...
    And you misunerstood what I said....

    Bruce's address is 3001 Vallette, Bellingham, WA
98225...

    If you want to bother him, knock yourself out....The
last person to do so spent a good stretch in the county
jail.....I guarantee that he doesn't want to see you...

    'My' only concern is that the link be traced to the
source.....And so far, no one has been able to do that...
Not even what appear to be government agencies....

    Bruce himself does not know where we are, or how the link is configured
at present....So rather than
busting him, and losing any chance that we will slip up and do something
stupid like visit him, they just watch him, electronically and in person.
He takes them coffee every now and then and they are the ones that arrested
the fellow who was after who he thought I was....(follow that?).

        Go back into the archives and look again...
And if you want me to go away you are out of luck..
        Try magick and I will refract it back in your face, as
I have done with one of the few people in this NG that
actually knows something about the subject...
        A clue: They vanished for quite a whle sometime
back, with no warning and no explanation upon their
return...

Assume in a log4j.properties file are some debug level statements which match all the
same current log record.
Which on has priority?

The more specific over the more general rule?
or
the first rule over a later one ?

Current log records:
INFO  com.mypack.mysubpack.aaa
DEBUG com.mypack.mysubpack.bbb
->
Rules:
com.mypack.mysubpack.aaa=WARN
com.mypack.mysubpack=INFO
com.mypack.mysubpack.bbb=DEBUG

Which one is displayed ?

An applet on one of my pages uses a big picture as background.
I want to load it before the applet and the rest of the html source.

By doing this I want to avoid that the pane of the applet is grey during the
load of the picture.

How do I do that?

Or even better: How can I display something like a progress bar or at least a
temporary, self removing
message (dialog) "Please wait a few second..." until the picture and the applet were
loaded completely?

Hi all,

When we should use Hybernate?

WHen I create a web appliaction, business layer communicates with db layer
(Session Beans/Entity Beans to Database), where or what is the need for a
persistence layer called Hybernate? Please help.

If you were to use H*I*bernate in this confiuration, you'd basically forego
using Entity Beans. Entity Beans are the persistence component of a
"generic" J2EE application, and Hibernate essentially overlaps much of that
functionality.

You could mix and match the too, but if you're designing and developing from
scratch, there's no reason. Just pick one technology and move forward.

Will Hartung
