With the helm lashed, Ama Deus goes to weather like she's on rails, even as
I move around from cockpit to windward ama.  I'm not sure how far it would
go with a free helm before getting into irons, but I suspect the most likely
time to go overboard is when one is out of the cockpit (and therefore have
the helm secured in some way) as opposed to actively helming the boat.

I always wear a tether when singlehanding, no matter what the weather, from
the moment I leave the dock to the moment I return.  Don't know if I could
get back into a charging boat, but I figure I want that second chance.

Cheers,

Tom Speer
