Compression is a technique used to shrink the size of an image file. In most cases, camera compression settings have quality-related names - Best, Better, Good, for example, or Fine and Normal. That's appropriate, because compression affects picture quality. Digital cameras typically use lossy compression - meaning that some image data is sacrificed during the compression process. The more lossy compression you apply, the lower the photo quality. So for the best-looking images, shoot your pictures using the setting that applies the least amount of compression. Of course, less compression means larger file sizes, so you can't fit as many pictures in the camera's memory as you can at a lower-quality setting. You also need to consider the compression factor when saving your images after editing them. Some file formats, such as JPEG, apply lossy compression during the save process, while others, such as TIFF, use lossless compression. With lossless compression, your file size isn't reduced as much as with lossy compression, but you don't lose important image data.
