Thanksgiving
Happy Turkey Day
We have the scoop on Turkey Trots that will help make room for extra stuffing and bar and club events that take advantage of our days off. And guess who's coming to town? Santa Claus receives his official holiday welcome during Reston's Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting on Friday.

Happy Holidaze
Check out our comprehensive guide to holiday food, restaurant specials, volunteer opportunities, and scores of festive concerts, exhibits and seasonal events.

You Light Up My Life
Parks all over the region are illuminated with twinkling holiday displays.

Joffrey Ballet's 'Nutcracker'
The Kennedy Center starts the holiday tradition early this year, when the Chicago dance company brings visions of sugarplums to coincide with your turkey feast. Start your celebrating with a deal: Attend the open rehearsal on Wednesday at 1:30 for $12. Doesn't fit your schedule? Check our list of more "Nutcracker" performances.

Scrooge Returns
Reunite with the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future during the annual presentation of "A Christmas Carol" at Ford's Theatre. The adaptation is new this year, so don't expect the same old Ebeneezer.

Mount Vernon by Candlelight
George Washington's Mount Vernon hosts its annual candlelight tours beginning Nov. 26. Running Friday through Sunday evenings, the holiday tours include caroling, cookies, hot cider and a blazing campfire.

Festival of Trees
Before you find just the right tree to bring inside for the Christmas holiday, check out the decorated ones (wreaths and gingerbread houses, too) at the Maryland State Fairgrounds this weekend. Come on Friday night for storytime with Baltimore Ravens kicker Matt Stover and Baltimore Orioles outfielder B.J. Surhoff.

The Trains of Christmas
Beginning Friday in Hagerstown, this show features an O-scale, three-rail winter layout with steam and diesel trains on three levels. See how trains were decorated for Christmases past.

Holiday Movies
Turkeys All Around
The weekend's major movie releases arrive in theaters on Wednesday, but you may not want to rush out to see them. Oliver Stone's epic "Alexander" is "boring here and exciting there. And it's almost always goofy," according to Weekend's Desson Thomson. He dislikes "Christmas With the Kranks" even more, calling it "a festering pile of celluloid." Fortunately, a few more films open on Friday. You can find out about them on our movies page. And feel free to explore our movie trailers here.

Coming Attractions
Trying to see some movies in between holiday shopping? Take a look at Desson's Thomson's holiday movie guide, which makes seasonal cinema scheduling a snap.

Thursday
After Dinner, Blowoff
It's Thursday night. Dinner is over. Football is over. Where to go on Thanksgiving night? To the 9:30 club, where Bob Mould and Richard Morel unveil a live, instrument-based version of their popular Blowoff DJ night, with both of them on guitar and vocals, playing with sequenced tracks. They'll also be DJing the entire night and will be mixing the live show directly into the DJ'd set. And you thought carving a turkey was tough.

Music: Be Thankful for Soul
Featured at the Thanksgiving Day Appreciation Soul Festival are the Lissen Band, Black Alley and Sound Proof -- three groups that blend a spectrum of R&B and go-go influences.

Friday
Music: The Grandsons
IOTA is a good place to burn off some of those Thanksgiving calories, as the Grandsons will offer up their always danceable blend of rockabilly, New Orleans R&B and country.

Music: New Potato Caboose
The local jam band celebrates its 20th anniversary with a performance at the State Theatre.

Music: Travis Morrison
And yet another local product in town for the holiday finds time to play a show. Former Dismemberment Plan frontman Travis Morrison has received mixed reviews for his solo debut, but should be welcomed with open arms at the Black Cat.

Dancing: Panic on the Streets of Washington
Panic, once one of Washington's most popular Britpop, alternative and indie-rock dance nights, resurfaces for a special event at DC9.

Friday and Saturday
Music: Last Train Home
For a band that's no longer based in the Washington area, Last Train Home (led by former Washington Post Nightwatch columnist Eric Brace) comes "home" a lot. Catch the roots rockers Friday at Wolf Trap or Saturday at Rams Head Tavern.

Saturday
Going Deep at Fur
Grammy-winning DJ duo Deep Dish spins from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. during a special holiday weekend performance at Fur. VIP tickets are available in advance from clubglow. Otherwise, arrive early.
