NETWORK WORLD NEWSLETTER: JEFF CARUSO ON HIGH SPEED LANS 11/23/04 Today's focus: Foundry, Chelsio strike 10 Gigabit alliance
Dear [EMAIL PROTECTED], In this issue: * Foundry Networks, Chelsio Communications team up * Links related to High Speed LANs * Featured reader resource _______________________________________________________________ This newsletter is sponsored by SBC Gimme Shelter! Converged Services Spell Relief For Beleaguered Network Managers Switched IP networks are rapidly becoming the corporate communications architecture of choice. By converging voice, data and video onto IP telephony platforms and Virtual Private Networks, enterprises can supply bandwidth when and where end users need it, while significantly lowering administrative and equipment costs. Specifically, the two companies are zeroing in on high-performance computing needs, pledging to "work closely" to come up with products for high-speed networking applications. That means several things, the most important of which is that the companies will do interoperability testing and benchmarking of Foundry's Ethernet switches and Chelsio's 10 Gigabit Ethernet adapters. The companies say they'll provide end-to-end performance measurements to help customers decide to buy their products. To their credit, they hired an independent tester, VeriTest, to verify their products' capabilities. In fact, the report is available here (in PDF format): <http://www.chelsio.com/technology/Chelsio10GbE_Foundry.pdf> The companies will also be marketing their products together for high-performance computing environments. Foundry and Chelsio are among the companies participating in those really long 10 Gigabit Ethernet test networks, like the one I wrote about last month that stretched from Tokyo to Geneva: <http://www.nwfusion.com/newsletters/lans/2004/1018lan2.html> These tests have helped Chelsio's adapter to stand out, along with its capability to offload TCP/IP processing from its host. This capability helps servers reach their full potential in transferring data over 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Interestingly, with the latest round of those 10 Gigabit Ethernet tests, the group performing the test claims, "At this transfer rate and distance, a full-length DVD can be transferred anywhere on the earth in less than five seconds." I'm sure the MPAA would be happy to hear them use this particular application as a driver for 10 Gig. _______________________________________________________________ To contact: Jeff Caruso Jeff Caruso is managing editor of online news for Network World.
