PN 18 likely to be diluted for future joint ventures
Government is finally set to clear the air on controversial Press Note 18,
1998, which requires foreign companies to obtain the consent of their Indian
partners before venturing on their own in the same line of business or an
allied activity.

A full-fledged free trade agreement with Thailand may take some time to work
out due to complexities in tariff structures.
The talks are progressing well.

Mid-cap rally sees GDR holdings fall
GDR holdings in a number of Indian companies listed overseas have seen a
sustained downtrend during June-September 2004 as players converted their GDR
holdings into domestic shares and offloaded them in the domestic market to take
advantage of rising stock prices of mid-cap companies.

Bengal taxes lowest among states
Residents of West Bengal have reason to smile: they are less taxed than their
counterparts in the rest of the country. At the other end of the spectrum is
Haryana, which is the most heavily taxed.

Lalus folly
Old habits die hard. But in the case of IR their persistence with old ways is
incredible. At the slightest pressure on their finances, IR thoughtlessly hikes
freight charges. And, they have done it again.

A positive investment climate
On year-on-year basis, non-food credit in mid-November 2004 was 27% higher
the highest since 1997. We know that corporates are rolling out new investments
in manufacturing. But they are doing so in a fashion that has taken into
account both the financial and business risks of their balance sheet expansion.

Getting incomes into legitimate tax net
Ever since the primary market collapsed under the onslaught of dubious
companies in 1993-94, no public meeting on capital markets is complete without
debating ways to restore investor confidence. Imagine my surprise then on
finding out that lakhs of Indian investors still prefer the dangerous and
illegal cash markets simply to avoid any detection by tax authorities.
