Redskins Face Struggling Giants This Week
The Washington Redskins -
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/WART046E8E0112949E17F3F12D1F20
, after consecutive road losses to the Philadelphia Eagles -
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/WART046E8E8052949E17F3F12D1F20
and Pittsburgh Steelers -
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/WART046E8E3002949E17F3F12D1F20
, finally get a chance to come home and face another struggling
team when they play the New York Giants -
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/WART046E8E90D2949E17F3F12D1F20
on Sunday at FedEx Field.
The Giants were one of the NFL's most surprising success stories in the early
stages of this
season, rebounding from an opening loss at Philadelphia to win
four straight games under new coach Tom Coughlin and veteran
quarterback Kurt Warner. But they've gone 1-5 since then, and
Coughlin benched Warner in favor of top overall draft pick Eli
Manning two games ago. Sunday's 27-6 defeat to the Eagles (10-1)
at Giants Stadium -
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/WART046E8E5082949E17F3F12D1F20
extended the Giants' losing streak to four games and clinched Philadelphia's
fourth straight
NFC East title. Coughlin said afterward that there were "not a
lot of positive comments about
the way we played."
Tailback Tiki Barber shrugged off a gash on his left knee that required six
stitches to have
his eighth 100-yard rushing performance of the season. But
Manning had only six completions
-- the fewest in a game for the Giants since October 1992 -- and wide receivers
Amani Toomer
and Ike Hilliard totaled one catch. Manning threw two
interceptions -
http://letters.washingtonpost.com/WART046E8E3342949E17F3F12D1F20 , giving him
four in his two NFL starts, and
the Giants managed only one field goal out of two first-half
scoring opportunities created by 50-yard-plus completions from
Manning to rookie
wideout Jamaar Taylor.
"We had opportunities early in the game," Toomer said. "We didn't capitalize
on them. That's
the story of our season. It comes down to turnovers again. We
didn't execute again. That is the problem. We don't execute. We
work all week on different things, and it just doesn't seem
to click."
In the second half, the Giants managed only 47 yards of offense and were
outscored, 20-0.
"After the first half, you are supposed to make adjustments and go out and
play better," cornerback
Will Peterson said. "We played worse."
Manning's offensive line isn't protecting him effectively, and he was sacked
five times by
the Eagles.
"He didn't have many opportunities to set and throw," Coughlin said. "We got
overpowered in
certain situations. ... We didn't tackle well and we didn't
block well. ... We made a big play here and there for the day,
but that's it. We didn't have a lot of continuity. But despite
that, I did not expect that the second half would be a shutdown
like it was. I expected us
to be competitive in the second half."
Giants linebacker Barrett Green stood up for Manning. Green was ejected for a
scuffle with
Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter -

on the Giants' sideline after Trotter was penalized for a late hit out of
bounds on Manning.
But Coughlin was not pleased about that, either.
"I think the altercation on the sideline was a dumb foul," he said. "I don't
care what anybody
says about that."
The injuries continued to pile up -

on defense for the Giants. They played without safety Gibril Wilson for a
second straight
game because of a shoulder injury. Linebacker Nick Greisen sat
out because of an ankle injury. End Chuck Wiley had his season
ended by torn knee ligaments suffered Sunday, further depleting
the Giants' depth at a position already weakened by
season-ending injuries to starters Michael Strahan and Keith
Washington. Run-stuffing defensive tackle Norman Hand limped off
the field
with a pulled groin muscle.
