OPINION IN BRIEF GOVERNMENT RE: THE LEFT POLITICAL FUTURES FOR THE RECORD SELECT READER COMMENTS THE LAST WORD ______----********O********----______ THE FOUNDATION "It is too early for politicians to presume on our forgetting that the public good, the real welfare of the great body of the people, is the supreme object to be pursued; and that no form of government whatever has any other value than as it may be fitted for the attainment of this object." --James Madison ______----********O********----______ INSIGHT "Go not for every grief to the physician, nor for every quarrel to the lawyer, nor for every thirst to the pot." --George Herbert ______----********O********----______ IChThUS IMPRIMIS "God may not be a Republican but he heard the fervent prayers of millions of values voters to keep His hand on America one more time despite our national sins of denying the right to life, despite ignoring the Biblical injunction against acts which are 'an abomination unto the Lord' and despite the blatant attempt to remove God from the public square. God gave this President and this President's Party one more chance. Will the President understand why he is still in office? Will Senators comprehend why the Republicans increased their majority? Will the Congress realize why the first sitting Senate leader was deposed since 1952? We shall see." --Paul Weyrich ______----********O********----______ FAMILY "Who are the people having kids today? Immigrants, yes. That's one group. But among white, middle-class Americans, religious people are having children at a much higher rate. More and more and more children percentage-wise than non-religious people. There's a survival value in religious beliefs. They have a sense of purpose. They feel their mission in life is to multiply and be fruitful. The whole Darwinian concept -- evolution -- is on the side of evangelical Christians. They're growing by any measure." --Ed Larson ______----********O********----______ CULTURE "Speaking of gay marriage, as long as liberals are so big on discussing 'mandates' and whether Bush has one (they say he does not), I think the one thing we can all agree on is that there is definitely a 'mandate' against gay marriage. In fact, a clear majority of us are uncomfortable with the word 'mandate' because it sounds like Wayne asking Stephen out for dinner and a movie." --Ann Coulter ______----********O********----______ LIBERTY "[T]he entire concept of driving money out of politics is itself ridiculous. Money, like water in a flood plain, will always find its level in the politics of a free country. One might as well try to ban the air we breathe as to proscribe the spending of campaign money. ... What we need is less legislation and fewer artificial limits on political speech, and more transparency that would enable us to see exactly who is financing what. The reforms that gave us the 527s, such as previous ones that gave us the PACs, wind up doing just the opposite." --Jonathan Tobin ______----********O********----______ THE GIPPER "It is not my intention to do away with government. It is rather to make it work -- work with us, not over us; stand by our side, not ride on our back. Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it." --Ronald Reagan ______----********O********----______ CALLING ALL PATRIOTS! Since our income tax system is steeply graduated, any across-the-board tax cut will immediately benefit most those who pay most of the taxes -- which is to say, people with higher incomes. After Ronald Reagan's tax rate cuts in the 1980s first brought out anguished cries of 'tax cuts for the rich,' it turned out that the federal government collected more tax revenue than ever and that people in upper income brackets not only paid a larger amount of taxes than before, but even paid a higher share of all taxes than before. How could this be? This takes us back to slippery words and sloppy thinking. What was cut were tax rates. What went up were tax revenues. At lower tax rates, it paid to take money out of tax shelters and put it somewhere where it was more productive, both for the individual investor and for the economy as a whole. As the economy expanded and incomes and employment rose, tax revenues rose, despite lower rates being charged for a given income. The incomes of people in the higher brackets went up especially sharply, so the total taxes they paid also went up especially sharply -- again, despite lower tax rates. Much sloppy thinking about economic issues is based on reasoning as if there is a fixed amount of income, so that someone has to lose whenever someone else gains. The real test of an economic policy is whether it can produce a rising tide that lifts all boats. Ronald Reagan's policies did that, even while he was being denounced for 'tax cuts for the rich'." --Thomas Sowell ______----********O********----______ GOVERNMENT "Take a look around you, America. Our nation is becoming less efficient, less productive, less secure and less educated than any time in our history. What is the common denominator in this equation? Government has gotten involved in more and more of our everyday routines. Government cannot protect you from every danger. It cannot efficiently run airlines. It cannot create meaningful, productive jobs in the private sector. It cannot run efficient, affordable healthcare. It cannot effectively protect the environment. It cannot provide a quality food supply. It cannot adequately provide for you in your old age. It cannot create energy. It cannot provide a quality lifestyle. And it cannot stop the threat of terrorism by putting you in a government data bank and tracking your every move. It can and will smother you with rules and regulations designed to perpetuate the growing power of government. That is what government does. Americans must learn that lesson or suffocate. Your papers, please." --Tom DeWeese ______----********O********----______ RE: THE LEFT "Since most of our military comes from red states, who do the blues imagine will defend them? The French? The Aspen Institute? An elite force of yoga instructors? Liberals have concocted a fantasy version of America, where all of the nation's brain-power and productivity reside in the blue states, while red America is a land of trailer parks, country-music bars, tractor-pulls and Klan rallies. (Quick, someone tell the Texans with their oil reserves, cattle and industrial output that they're a virtual wasteland.) ...Red state residents are portrayed as slack-jawed knuckle-draggers, ignorant, superstitious yokels inflamed by wily politicians and pernicious preachers." --Don Feder ______----********O********----______ POLITICAL FUTURES "Europeans excoriate America even as they stand on quicksand. In what Middle Eastern scholar and JWR columnist Daniel Pipes calls the biggest story of our time, Europe is disappearing. The minimum birthrate necessary to keep a society going is 2.1 children per woman. Europe's birthrate is 1.5 and falling. The immigrants who are taking the place of Germans, Italians, French and others are largely Muslim. In contrast to the irreligious native Europeans, Muslim immigrants are passionate about their faith and highly fertile. It is estimated that in England, Muslim worshippers at mosques already outnumber congregants of the Church of England every weekend. About five percent of the European Union is now Muslim, and historian Bernard Lewis told a German newspaper that Europe would be majority Islamic by the end of this century 'at the latest.' At present, more than 15 percent of the 16-24 age group in France is Muslim. In Brussels, one quarter of those under the age of 25 is Muslim. Muslims also account for 25 percent of the population of Marseille, and 20 percent of the population of Malmo, Sweden. Immigration, both legal and illegal, from Islamic countries continues. As Timothy Savage has noted in The Washington Quarterly, the United Nations estimates that Europe's native population will decline by 100 million or more in the next 50 years. The Muslim minority in Europe is quite fecund, however, and will double in size by 2015. Yet while some Europeans are dismayed by these trends, something (political correctness?) prevents them from even discussing the subject. Civilizations don't just disappear, they are overtaken by others who are hungrier, more aggressive and more energetic." --Mona Charen ______----********O********----______ FOR THE RECORD "Marxism is an emotional disorder, not a political philosophy. Wealthy people sometimes accept Marxism, not because it has ever worked, but because they feel guilty about having more than other people. But, more often, it is accepted by those with less who are angry, usually because they lack the talent and drive to succeed in a capitalist society. This realization often occurs at a ten-year high school reunion after they see people with less schooling and fewer degrees but with more money than they have. They don't want to compete with these people. They just want the IRS take their wealth and 'redistribute' it against their will under the threat of incarceration. They also like to call conservatives 'fascists'." --Mike Adams ______----********O********----______ SELECT READER COMMENTS (Our servers automatically delete "Reply" messages to this email. Thank you fellow Patriots for all the good work you do through The Federalist Patriot. As a senior staff member for a Republican Senator, I can tell you that The Patriot is the voice of liberty, and in this town, we hang on every word. Veritas vos Liberabit indeed!" --Washington, D.C. "My wife and I were moved to tears yesterday at Mass as we sang these words: 'O beautiful for heroes proved, In liberating strife. Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life!' We thought of our friends serving in Iraq right now. We also thought of those, like the son of Col. Sims (http://FederalistPatriot.US/news/farewell.asp) who gave the last full measure of devotion. We thank God for the benefits won by the sacrifice of his son and so many others. We thank him and his family for all they have given, all they have risked and now all that they have lost. That sacrifice will not be in vain! Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon them. Amen." --San Antonio, Texas "I am a Marine veteran of OIF I. I wrote to you in September as my son was about to deploy with the Marines for OIF II. You were kind enough to send me five Shields of Strength at no charge. Just wanted you to know that the Shields along with the prayers of many Americans worked. My son was shot on the 8th day of the Fallujah offensive. While the wound is serious, the prognosis is good. I just returned from NAVMEDCEN San Diego, and although my son is in quite a lot of pain, his spirits are good. I was overwhelmed and humbled by the courage of the 90 Marines recovering from their wounds with my son. God bless these fine young men and their sacrifice in the defense of liberty." Flint, Michigan "I regret that I am not able to support The Federalist Patriot right now. I was 'downsized' and we are living hand to mouth -- literally not a dime to spare. But I do want to say thank you for your encouraging words -- I look forward to every edition!" --Detroit, Michigan Editor's Reply: As always, we are proud to count you among our Patriot readers regardless of you ability to support us financially. "As a war veteran, and an old American Patriot, I thank The Federalist Patriot staff for all you have done to put the truth on the table during these last 6 months. There were days that I was extremely depressed about the way this election was going, but reading The Patriot e-journals always got me back up and ready to fight for what this country is all about. Thanks!" --Hartford, Connecticut "I can't begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed reading your publication; today's issue served as a soothing message after reading about the ACLU's attack on the Pentagon for supporting the BSA. You inspired me to stand up and speak out. I am the Commandant of a Marine Corps League, Commander of an American Legion Post and an American through and through who has been writing letters all day to the Media, Officials at National Headquarters of my Org., and Congressmen. What a relief to find an email from a friend telling me that Sen. Frist from your home state of Tennessee has introduced a Bill to save the Scouts. Of course the Demos opposed it but I hope that all the pots I stirred today will get him the support he needs when they reconvene. Thanks for your Publication. God bless you and your staff!" --Cincinnati, Ohio "I am sure the embedded NBC Reporter/Cameraman (Sites) would be glad to check all bodies in the future for the 3rd Battalion as well as negotiate with white flag bearers. If any bodies seem to be a trap, he can photograph them and show the footage to the Marines and they will know which ones to be wary of." --Denver, Colorado "So, Geraldine Ferraro insists that the Red states are dependent on the Blue states? She has it exactly backwards. How much wheat and how many cattle are raised in Blue state urban centers? You can eat stock certificates, Geraldine, but they really don't provide that much nutrition. Oh, wait, even those are all electronic now. I suppose Geraldine will have to try subsisting on bite-sized bytes. Fact of the matter is, urban centers are totally dependent on rural America." --Chicago, Illinois "After having received The Federalist Patriot via email for several years now, and having found it extremely informative and, often, entertaining, I can only say this: The Patriot Rocks! It takes a lot to get me to open my wallet, but The Patriot is a publication I wholeheartedly endorse and, now, proudly support. Keep up the good work! Best wishes to all for a happy holiday season!" --Dallas, Texas ______----********O********----______ THE LAST WORD "Liberals of America, unite! Leave this horrid and wicked and irredeemable backwater! Why not create a workers' paradise off the shores of France? You can all speak French, allow Janet Jackson to show both her breasts, create a cradle-to-grave welfare state, drink Starbucks lattes, read The New York Times every day, scramble the satellite signal for Fox News, and worship your new leader, Michael Moore! [Heck], we'll throw in Harvard and the whole faculty! It's a gift. Here's an added incentive: You will never have to take the war on terrorism to the terrorists; they will almost certainly bring it right to your doorstep. Now, there's the catch in all this. It turns out that a lot of the liberals can't afford the trip, or the entry fee into places like Canada. So here's my idea: a new project called the Export a Liberal Fund. From this pool we will donate $100 to every liberal who agrees to give up his U.S. citizenship and flee the country permanently. Warning #1: There's no coming back for health care when you get sick. Warning #2: There will be no amnesty program. These are one-way tickets. ... I, for one, stand ready and willing to do my patriotic part and contribute to the Export a Liberal Fund. I hope you will join me in this worthy charitable endeavor. Let's really go out and paint the country red!" --Stephen Moore Lex et Libertas -- Semper Vigilo, Paratus, et Fidelis!
