A Healthy Holidays Message From healthfinder®

During this holiday season, please take a little extra time to help ensure a safe and healthy holiday for family, friends, and yourself, and to start the new year in a healthy way. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning holiday gift shoppers to check for previously recalled toys and to get the word out to their neighbors. Other CPSC product recalls, such as the Ab Lounge(tm), are available at www.cpsc.gov.

Festive food is a large part of many holiday gatherings, and a few simple steps will help ensure delicious and safe meals for you, your family, and your friends. Great seasonal food safety tips are available from the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), Department of Agriculture, and www.foodsafety.gov.

Many people experience the 'holiday blues' at some time. The American Academy of Family Physicians offers information about symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and the National Mental Health Association offers suggestions for avoiding Holiday Depression & Stress.

The beginning of each year is also a good time to take stock of your health. www.healthfinder.gov offers over 50 interactive online checkups, organized by health topic, to help you get started. Two of the most popular are Calculate Your Body Mass Index and Interactive Menu Planner. These are both part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Aim for a Healthy Weight Web site, which can help you assess your healthy weight and plan to reach and maintain it.

For a handy pocket guide to personal health, visit the consumer section of the Put Prevention Into Practice program from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and choose the personal health guide that is right for you: there's one for children, adults, and those over 50, and they provide tips and recommendations on health habits, screening tests, and immunizations. From the National Women's Health Information Center, check out screening test and immunization guidelines for men and women.

Get a jump on your 2005 New Year's resolutions--before the stress of the holiday season starts to take its toll--and begin a game plan that involves exercising more, eating better, and quitting smoking (if you haven't already).  Your plan might include tracking a walking or other physical activity program using the tools on www.presidentschallenge.org.  And eating right isn't boring--the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute offers many delicious heart-healthy recipes on its Web site.

Information on many more health topics is easily accessible online or by telephone.  The new 2005 National Health Observances calendar provides information about the year's upcoming health promotion and disease prevention events. New 2005 editions of Federal Health Information Centers and Clearinghouses and Toll-free Numbers for Health Information are now available from the National Health Information Center.

Of course, please visit www.healthfinder.gov any time you have a health question.  And just a reminder that you also can sign up to receive daily health news headlines by e-mail. Daily health news articles are featured on the healthfinder® Web site, with 1-year searchable archives in English and Spanish.
