One of the most prominent characteristics in a hero is strength. Lots
of people share stories of overcoming odds, suffering through
illnesses, and standing up for whats right. In each of those types of
heroes, strength is a key factor. Gwen Walton of Midlothian, Illinois,
also has a hero of strength but this is a little different. Read to
see why.

Today's Hero:

My hero is my son TJ. It was Monday February 16, 2004, and I had just
found out a family friend of ours had passed away after an on-and-off
illness. I came home and told the family that our friend Bob had
passed on. With that we all started to get ready for bed. My
daughter Krystal was already asleep in her bed. As my two boys TJ (who
is 8 years old) and Colin (who is 4 years old) were getting ready for
bed, they wanted their kittens to sleep with.

TJ already had found his kitten to sleep with, so the three of us went
to look for Colin's kitten. We found him downstairs on the laundry
where he always sleeps. I went back upstairs to my room to get ready
for bed when I heard Colin crying. He brought the kitten in to me and
was crying he wasn't moving. He was right - the kitten who was 3 1/2
months old, had passed away also.

So now I got hysterical, and all of us were crying. We woke up my
daughter, and then my dear TJ stopped crying took his brother in his
arms and told him not to worry - that his kitten can now be both of
their kittens. My heart just swelled, even in troubling times, my son
has such a golden heart that he would stop to think to say something
like that. He helped his little brother bury the kitten in the back
yard. Even after a few months if his brother gets down and talks
about missing his kitten Bobo, he will go find the other kitten for
him to hold and tells him that his kitten is looking down on him from
heaven. So even when I lost it, my dearest 8-year-old TJ held it
together and made all of us feel good. I don't know what I would of
done that terrible night if it wasn't for him. He will always be a
hero in my eyes.

The best thing we can be is the hero of another.

Sincerely,
Susan Derby
