II. Today's Health & Fitness Topic Folate Fights CancerFolate-rich foods may help reduce the risk of a deadly female cancer. A recent study revealed that, compared to women who consumed low levels of folate, women who consumed at least 200 micrograms of folate in their diets every day were as much as one-third less likely to develop ovarian cancer. The effect was strongest in women who also drank alcohol in moderation. Excessive alcohol intake may increase a person's risk of certain cancers. Limit yourself to no more than one alcoholic drink per day (women) or two alcoholic drinks per day (men). A diet high in folate may decrease the risk of certain cancers and also help keep the heart healthy by lowering blood levels of an inflammatory protein that is associated with heart disease. The optimum dose of folate is 700 micrograms per day from food and supplements. Folate also is known as folic acid, the synthetic form of folate. Food sources of folate include orange juice, peas, asparagus, spinach, and beans such as lima beans and soybeans. Most breads and cereals available in grocery stores are fortified with folic acid.
