Today's focus: Hear about which technologies are sure bets for
net execs in 2005

By Linda Leung

Your IT budget is a little looser than it was a few years ago
and you want to know which technologies would be wise
investments over the coming year. Security is high on your
agenda but so is supporting your expanding net of remote
workers. And then you'll need better technology to manage your
complex network, plus decide whether wireless LANs will really
benefit your organization.

If those issues are on your plate for 2005, I want to let you
know about our IT Roadmap: 2005 Technology Tour that began this
week in Boston. The event will travel to San Francisco and
Dallas, and will finish in Chicago on Dec.16. The tour is
being led by Johna Till Johnson, founder, president and chief
research officer at Nemertes Research, and a popular Network
World columnist; and John Gallant, Network World president and
editorial director.

The moderators will discuss where IT is headed in the New Year
and the technologies that should be in your strategic plan for
2005 and why. They will explain which technologies you shouldn't
bother with, and outline the kinds of solutions you should start
implementing now. You will also hear about action-plans for
next-generation IT governance.

Among the technologies examined will be:

* Next generation security - covering VPNs,
anti-virus/anti-spam, identity management, and
privacy/compliance.

* New data centers and storage - covering information lifecycle
management, business continuity planning/disaster recover,
information protection.

* WAN/LAN - covering optimized switching, bandwidth and route
optimization, compression and caching, load-balancing and
network performance engineering.

* Wireless, remote access, IP telephony - covering messaging and
presence, real-time collaboration, productivity, and secure
remote-office networking.

* Network, data center and application performance management -
covering monitoring, troubleshooting, event correlation,
proactive responsiveness.

* Business strategies and best practices - covering deployment
for large and small and midsize businesses; organizational and
operational best practices; project planning and management; and
cost justification and ROI development for emerging
technologies.

Johnson and Gallant will be joined on stage by some vendors of
the technologies being discussed, including Adtran, Aruba, AT&T,
Foundry Networks, Internet Security Systems, Lucent and Peribit.

You'll also get to see technologies in action by exhibitors
Akonix, Aprisma, Connected, Evolve Technology Group, Finisar,
Fluke Networks, IntraSystems, IronPort, Klogix, NetViz, and
Secure Computing.

The event will cover a lot of ground and the moderators promise
that you'll walk away with their perspectives of and forecasts
for effective technologies to help you decide what should be on
your 2005 IT plan.
