I have an F24MkII which I sail on Lake Erie, and some inland lakes.
I use a Garmin GPSMAP 188 Sounder. The current cost including
transducer is $587 from AnchorExpress.com.
This one instrument, provides Depth with alarm, all GPS functions
(speed, position, MOB, etc.), Marine Data (closest Marina,
Anchorages, Restaurants, etc.), a Fishfinder, and moving Nautical
Charting (5.5 inches 240 x 360 backlit monochrome display).
It was installed by the Finshline. The transducer (stock for transom
mount is mounted in a bed of epoxy in cutout and reglassed
depression in the inner-hull, below the V-berth. The Display is
mounted on a swing arm inside near the cabin entrance, so when not
in use it swings in to the cabin, protected from the elements and
theft. During use it swings out on a double arm so it can be read
from the cockpit, and swivels so it can be read from the nets.
I am extremely happy with this units capabilities, performance,
readability, functionality. I find the Monochrome display works
great and can not see paying the extra cost for a Color display. The
display size is adequate, and the data windows can be reconfigured
to show the information you desire, I normally display the map on
the bottom and speed, `compass', depth, and lat/long position on the
top. Another display configuration that works well when sailing from
the nets, is to just split the display into 3 large windows with
large alphanumerics, displaying `compass', speed, and depth or
lat/long position.
I find the charts to be very accurate and have used the unit to find
and enter unfamiliar marinas at night.
As for general wind information I call NOAA Dial-a-Buoy
www.ndbc.noaa.gov/dial.shtml and FAA ASOS/AWOS sites
www.faa.gov/asos/ and adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov/
For specific wind information I use shroud and sail mounted
telltales and the feel of the wind on me. I would like to have
onboard wind speed, but, as of yet haven't purchased a unit, which
will most likely be a handheld unit.
