I finally got everything sorted out through this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/26373129/error-on-neo4j-server-start-on-arch-linux Looked like some sort of issue with the way the user was being created (had the details in my head better at the time). I'm away from the relevant computer at the moment, but if you want to compare setups I can have a look tonight.
