found the issue, need to add the following when running unit testing:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.scala-lang</groupId>
<artifactId>scala-compiler</artifactId>
<version>2.11.7</version>
<scope>test</scope>
</dependency>
version 2.11.7 is derived from Neo4j version.
