  For Completeness, if you are only going to be programming that one single
PIC.. and you prefer a socket type programmer, you can still use a good JDM
programmer. I have had nothing but good things to say about this programmer,
just caveat that newest chips are not going to work.

I'm a big fan of in-circuit programming, try it, you'll like it.
With regard to the PicKit3, I really would spend a little time comparing the
spec between the PicKit2 & PicKit3... If there's not a new feature you need,
might save some money. "Some future microcontroller might not be compatible
with the PicKit2" is probably not the greatest reason. Unless Microchip
drops support for programmers a lot faster than Atmel, I think that you
don't have much to worry about there. (Only speculating, though).
