Regarding all this DNS business, I will side with @Lucky's assessment that URLs not working in the browser is a possible indication of infection; I myself have had machines infected such that, everything DNS-related worked *except* both IE and Firefox, and then only sometimes (only google searches were redirected, in one case). Taking the machine down and rebooting from Ulitmate Boot CD and running Spybot Search and Destroy usually does the trick, but in one case (Vista), I just told the person (my mother in law) to upgrade (to Windows 7).
