For most of us the warm soft subtle glow of neon is a pleasure to behold.
However, there is a point where it can lose its appeal.

I was rooting around in my graveyard of pinball displays recently and found
a badly cooked one. For some perverse reason I decided to fire it up to see
what it looks like and it is not pretty.

Bally, in their wisdom, decided that they would make their high voltage
circuit fail at max voltage. They argued that a pinball machine with no
visible display would take no money, whereas one with frying displays would
continue to attract coins.

In the case of the one I just fired up, the silvering on the glass is now
so acute it robs the current and glows around the burn points to the extent
that most segments will not fire correctly any more and are unreadable.

What's the worst neon display you ever had?
