I guess I just don't understand why people get so upset. Let him put them up for $1,000. Or $10,000. Who cares? They are his, and he can set the price. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy them :)

Absolutely! Since I'm not dead-set on building an 8091-based clock, I'm only bidding opportunistically. If I got them, they would go into a box until I have time to build something a few years from now.

It's too easy to get caught-up in nixie-tube bidding based on how much you might want a particular tube (I'm an addict, and I want them....what can I say ???), so I've cut-out the emotional part of how I value a tube, and base my bid on cost for a given size relative to other available tubes. No surprise, I lose a lot of auctions. But at least my garage doesn't look like an episode of 'Extreme Hoarders' on TV.

The 1.375" (35mm)  character-height of a b8091 is less than a IN-18 (40mm), and these b8091 tubes have an undocumented history. They are substantially smaller than the RZ568m, which is brand-new, has a 10-year warranty, and in my opinion has better construction.
