You might be able to de-poison the '2' by running higher current on it for a 
few hours.

So I then got the idea to treat it just like a regular neon indicator and 
connect it directly to mains (230V), only using an anode resistor. I always had 
this idea in my head to make a neon night light and this seems to fit in quite 
well.
I think using digit 1 looks best but of course you can use any digit (or 
digits, just make sure the resistor can handle it). The AC current makes the 
anode glow as well which is just what I wanted. But if you want to just light 
up 1 digit or the anode mesh you can use a bridge rectifier of course. For me 
it's okay like this.
Time to make build a nice case around it!
