None of these bargraph audio level meters (they're all over eBay) are true "VU" 
meters as such but this one does seem to be using some sort of log converter 
chip (I can't make out the numbers in the pictures) which would make it more 
useful for the purpose. I'm also seeing more meters that use IN-9s.

My beloved JVC cassette deck has a spectrum analyzer in addition to the level 
meters. The only snag is that it uses slow LCDs. The previous model used a two 
or three color VFD and boy was it fast!
