On the SII, there is no insert on the 2mix bus, or any other bus for
that matter. Your method makes a lot of sense; take the 2mix, process
it, then send it to the 2 track and monitor the 2 track via the 2
track monitor button in the master section.
My signal flow memory of the SII is a bit rusty, but you might be
able to do the same thing by sending your tracks, with their
'mixdown' buttons not engaged, to buses 1-2 for example, and then
patching the bus 1-2 outputs back to a pair of channels that are
routed to the 2mix bus. You could then insert whatever hardware
effects in the patch from the bus 1-2 outs and the pair of channel
inputs that are routed to the 2mix. I guess you'd have to use the
tiny pan pot, and not the big one near the channel fader, but that's
not a biggie.
The only advantage there is that your processed mix appears on the
2mix outs, so it goes to 2tracks 1-4, and your meters follow the
processed mix as normal.
The other option is to add an unbalanced patch point to the 2mix bus
by doing some razor blade work to the PCB foil of the 2mix module.
I'd put it after the bus summing stage (the 5534 stage) but before
the send to the 2mix fader. Then, you could mix normally, and have an
unbalanced insert point for your processing.
The bad part is that you've added a length of cable that every signal
you're mixing must go through... from the bus summing amp out to the
patchbay, and then back to the 2mix fader through the patchpoint
normal contacts. Yeah, not a huge degradation, but that's the tradeoff.
