I just turned up an "Addendum to Series II Studio Monitor Module" tech note in my schematics and it's called "revised circuitry for increased isolation in talkback audio chain." Not sure it's specifically addressing the popping, but I found it kind of interesting anyway. I also found some previous tech notes that seem to suggest someone else has had a go at fixing this at some point and then gave up.
