Actually the userVisibility stuff is for 4.6 only. And also recent tests make it much slower than the previous approach. This is something that confuses me a lot and reason enough not to backport it.
As for nicing Virtuoso: I agree with that. And the trunk version already does that. So all we need to do is to backport that to 4.5.2.
