Also note you are sure what you mean by "ping". Are referring to the ICMP
echo request or an attempt to do some TCP magic.
If you play with nmapfe you will notice that the nmap default is to do
both. If you want to do just ICMP (like the ping command does) you should
use the -PI option as described in the manual page of nmap.
