The ethereal idea is good. I would also load the script within 'memprof'. 

At least then you can see if it is actually being allocated and loaded into 
the memory. Given the fact that you aren't getting any output. I loaded 
mine...looks as though i get 1250 allocations; with no leaks.

Alternately you can also use:

./nessus-update-plugins 2>&1 > nessus-update-err+out.txt

This will send all stdout(if any ;) )..as well as stderr conditions into the 
same file.
