Ahh, that's close to it I'd made sure I could ping the remote machine, but hadn't noticed that the default nessus "ping" was TCP. Changing that to ICMP or disabling pings allows it to start Might it not be handy for nessus to tell you "that host you explicitly told me to scan didn't respond to a ping, giving up", rather than having it disapear?
