Give a try by manually edit your XF86Config (it might be XF86Config-4) in /etc/X11/
(select the depth your using by default)

Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
Viewport 0 0

And startx... (checking the log might be useful)

Hi all, i have this problem, y install mandrake 9.1 and install de rpms from contrib,
the configuration it seems it works but when i open de gtk client i cant see the
buttons down de windows, i tried to change my definition from 800x600 to 1024 or
rezise de windows but isnt work, any idea to solve this? Many many thanks
