For over four years, the request that has been constantly popping up in my
mailbox is a request for a Windows version of Nessus.
Today, I am pleased to announce that we are starting the NeWT beta program
for users of Windows 2000 and/or Windows XP.
. What is NeWT ?
NeWT stands for "Nessus for Windows Technology". It uses most of the Nessus
technology, but on Windows. It executes the very same NASL scripts than the
Unix version of Nessus, at a very comparable speed, and runs with a very
easy-to-use GUI.
It is commercialized by Tenable Network Security, the company I co-founded
with Ron Gula.
NeWT is a vulnerability scanner - it finds security vulnerabilities. It does
not patch the remote systems. It does do not do vulnerability management.
It "just" finds vulnerabilities, the same way Nessus does.
. Is it free ?
NeWT is free of use for a 30 days trial period, after that a licence much be
purchased. The pricing is WAY below most of the commercial competition in
this field, though.
. What does that mean for Nessus ? Is it the end of the free Nessus ?
Absolutely not. Nessus developement will continue to be as active as
today. There is no plan for a super-secret feature that will be on NeWT
only. Nessus 2.2 developement is going well and will be released when
ready.
. Where can I get NeWT ?
Send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and ask to be part of the beta
program. Then send them back your feedback, comments and suggestions.
Thanks,
