Net::Nessus doesn't support SSL by itself; your experiences are typical of a nessusd that encrypts its traffic. You can either: - Set "ssl_version = NONE" in nessusd.conf and restart your daemon to send communications in the clear. - Use Net::Nessus in combination with Net::Nessus::ScanLite, which is primarily intended just for launching attacks.
