Hi George.

I settled for stable 2.0.12 version now.

I hope the following is of help to anyone else trying to
install nessus on SuSE 8.1 pro.

As a test case, I installed the compiled rpm version 1.2.3
of nessus from the CD-ROM. It worked fine, so that was
encouraging.

Thankyou for the info on /tmp file permissions.
It was noexec, as I allow file uploads to my web server,
which stores them temporarily there. I changed this to exec
with the 'mount -o remount,exec /tmp' command.

Still had problems getting nessus-core 2.0.12 to compile,
when using the 4 seperate installation tarballs.

Some other problems were:

Had to download the gtk2-devel files from SuSE, as it was
not on the CD-ROM!

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/8.1/suse/i586/gtk2-devel-2.0.6-71.i586.rpm

Had to set:

PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin/

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=:/usr/lib/pkgconfig/

in /etc/profile.local

/nessus-core/configure was asking for gtk+-2.0

so I downloaded the exact gtk+ version configure was asking
for, and concentrated on getting that working.

Other problems were with atk, pango, pangox backend and
libpng.

Had to install the develoment files for the those packages.
(never compiled a gtk+ dependent program before).

Had to mess around with the /usr/lib/pkgconfig/ *.pc config
files for various gtk+ packages.

Had to copy atk.pc to png.rc and modify as in:
(Requires line may not be needed)

prefix=/usr
exec_prefix=${prefix}
libdir=/usr/lib
includedir=/usr/include

Name: libpng
Description: Needed by GTK+
Version: 1.2.4
Requires: gobject-2.0 gmodule-2.0
Libs: -L${libdir} -lpng12
Cflags: -I${includedir}/png

Once I got gtk+ configured without errors was then able to
compile and install it.

I deleted and re-installed the nessus 2.0.12 directories and
did a fresh ./configure; make; make install; and it compiled OK.

Thankyou for your help.

No doubt I'll be back to the list again soon with some more
questions about using nessus.

Kind Regards - Keith Roberts
