Thanks so much. That seems to have done the trick. 
Have now run into nessus-core compile issues, which I will submit a new
question about.

I meant run that at a commandline, but you probably don't need to do
that if the following works.

Rebuild everything then, starting with nessus-libraries.  And when you
run nessus-libraries/configure, add the argument
"--with-ssl=/opt/freeware" -- this tells Nessus where to find the
OpenSSL include files and libraries.
