Sorry for the late reply George. I think the problem is with the Solaris 5.9. We had a new application that is not supported in Solaris 5.9. With Solaris 5.8 the nessus scanner just runs fine in both cli and gui modes. Now I am not able to reproduce the problem, as I don't have the hardware :-(. Did anyone ran Nessus 2.2.3 on Ubuntu Linux 5.04 successfully against Solaris 5.9. I am wondering if this is indeed a problem with Solaris 5.9 or it was my application that was running on 5.9?

What are the last few lines logged in nessusd.messages when the client appears to hang (ie, after it reports "attack|<target host ip>|1905|1905")? Can you run strace against the client pid and see anything interesting when it appears to hang? And finally, a silly question perhaps, is write access to the results file possible?
