Only if you want the install the GUI.
Somewhere I read that certain other freeware packages, if present, could also
be used by Nessus. These included, I think, ethereal, nmap, a password guesser
(maybe it was John the Ripper) and one or two other things.
So, my question is, for the most complete Nessus installation and a GUI, what
all should I have installed prior to installing Nessus itself?
The following packages, if present, can be used by nessus
hydra (plus dictionary files, or other files containing the
login/passwords to brute force)
nikto,
nmap
You do not need to install them before you install nessus though.
ethereal can be helpful when you want to debug scans (provided you save
the pcap dump of the scan), but it is run totally seperate from nessus.
