I always figured Nessus was a reference to the Puppeteer in Larry
Niven's Ringworld. After all, the puppeteers as a race are constantly
paranoid about their own safety and security, but Nessus is the one
willing to go out and actually determine how much of a threat the
ringworld might pose to their race.
Maybe it's a bit like folk etymology, but it makes sense to me.

PS: Totally OT, but where did the name Nessus come to be associated with
a vuln scanner? I can't figure any linkage between Centaurs and vuln
scanners. :-)
