Perhaps you've figured this out already, but just in case... When you log in with a Nessus client, the server sends back a lot of information, including the list of currently available plugins and preferences. This can take some time, especially over a slow link or with a slow nessusd host. You could try tracing the client operation using something like strace. Or just wait for, say, 5 minutes.
