Hm, you're right. There also exists a plugin to identify a vmware-server.

vmware_detect.nasl relies primarly on the MAC adress, but the list seems not to be complete for not discovering my VMware :) vmware_server_detect.nasl checks the banner of the VMware remote-console but also failed to identify my server. Hopefully I got time to write a fix during my holidays.

Cheers,

Toby

Hi folks,

While scanning networks how good is nessus in identifying VMWare running machines?

Does nesssus scan and report OS and Applications on VMWare successfully?

Nessus identifies if the remote host is running under VMWare with vmware_detect.nasl. All the rest (OS/Applications) is done by standard Nessus plugins.
