Larry,

We've run Nessus in a VMware configuration, though not like yours. We
use a Linux host OS with VMWare workstation. The Linux host has Nessus
server on it (2.x) and the VMware runs Windows guest machines. The
virtural windows systems connect to the Nessus server. Performance wise
it works fine.
If you want to run Nessus itself in a virtual system, the most
critical performance factor I can think of is RAM. Just for VMWare
workstation we use PC's with 2 gigabytes of RAM. For VMWare server you'd
probably want 4 gigs minimum and I'd personally prefer something more
like 8 or 16 gigs. You want as much as possible for the virtual systems
to not need swap.

I'm in the process of setting up a new scanning server. The base
OS is Suse 10.1 running VMware server. I have created a Backtrack 2.0
virtual machine and loaded nessus 3.0.4.

Is anyone on this list running nessus in a virtual machine? I
ask because when nessusd loads it gives a warning message saying
performance is abysmal running in vmware. Will this work or not?
