David,

What version of Nessus Client / Server are you running? Would you please send 
screenshots of the output you are seeing? Also, are you using a 
credentialed or non-credentialed scan? What results are you expecting to see? 
Since you don't mention errors, I assume the scans are completing 
successfully.

Running the server and client on the same system should not be an issue in most 
cases and I have done exactly what you are doing now in the past 
with no issues at all.
