This report shows that community development organizations have been slow to adopt technology. The report, funded by the Ford Foundation is the first survey of technology usage in community development organizations. It concludes that for these organizations it's not about access anymore -- surprisingly even the smallest organizations have computers -- it's all about applications. The organizations haven't taken a cue from the business world and started to take advantage of technology to help them achieve their missions. Most have not gone beyond email and simple database management because they don't have the resources or the expertise to do more. The report does show that when organizations partner with a university, intermediaries or a foundation, innovation is the result. For example, community development organizations in LA, in partnership with UCLA, are using sophisticated computer mapping to reduce predatory lending and the number of abandoned houses. Field Trips Site currently has 32 Virtual Field Trips covering a range of subjects and age groups. You'll find field trips on the rainforest, endangered species, Shakespeare, women's history, hurricanes, oceans, the Oregon Trail, Pi, and much more. http://www.field-trips.org/ The goal of the Field Trips Site is to make the best use of Internet technology in the classroom environment, creating efficient, focused, and safe use. Teachers will also find field trips a timesaver when needing to gather information on a particular subject. Most trips also include teacher's resources. This site has won many educational awards for its ease of use, consistency, and its content. If you're interested in learning more about using Virtual Field Trips in the K-12 classroom, you may enjoy, "The Big Pocket Guide to Using & Creating Virtual Field Trips." More info on this book is available at Field Trips Site, http://www.field-trips.org/book. If you'd like to try your hand at creating your own virtual field trips, download free trial software from http://www.tramline.com. Also, I facilitate two sessions each month, one on using Virtual Field Trips, and the other on how to create them. These free sessions are offered through TAPPED IN, an online international forum for educators. Dates and times for these sessions can be found at: http://www.field-trips.org/training.htm and more info about TAPPED IN at http://www.tappedin.org. I hope you and your students enjoy these field trips. Happy travels!
