With support from its parent, the International Society for Technology in Education, it deals in "research guideposts to better technology decisions." The site presents research findings which answer some of the questions that education technology planners typically ask. Example question: "What strategies result in effective instructional applications of technology?" The Website provides three more detailed questions that stem from that one, and then reviews one or two recent published studies that answer each detailed question. CARET seems to pick only the studies that were well enough designed to answer the question unequivocally. Its collection numbers just 27 studies at this time, but more studies are being added and user input is welcomed. There is also a "Find Studies" search page where you can search for formal studies according to specific search criteria. Each resulting reference is organized into a number of useful categories such as major implications for educators, major questions answered, and strengths and limitations of the study. CARET has no advertising and charges no fees as it is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. We created this streaming-media website as a way of sharing with people everywhere the important messages of archaeology and indigenous peoples. TAC has value to educators in a variety of ways. Our on-demand streaming video and audio content may be used in classroom lessons and we have a Teacher Resources area (accessible from our home page) that includes lesson plans and other kinds of information designed to assist teachers in employing archaeology in the classroom. We are constantly expanding our list of videos (29 so far) and audio programs and adding new features. We are also about to expand our Teacher Resources area dramatically by compiling links to curriculum elements and other materials on the Web. We and all professional archaeological organizations believe that archaeology has a largely untapped potential to excite kids about learning and provide valuable lessons, and not only about the human past. Archaeology is a valuable means of encouraging tolerance, multicultural perspectives and respect for diversity. Because archaeology involves many different disciplines, it can be used to teach any subject under the sun, including social studies, math, science, geography, writing, art, and many others. ALI is committed to promoting the use of archaeology by educators at all levels. Any feedback you have should be directed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Dr. Richard Pettigrew, Executive Director, Archaeological Legacy Institute). ========== Forwarded by Gretchen Eisenbeis ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Intern for TAC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 May 2002 07:26:28 -0500 From: Gleason Sackmann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: K12> EDNEWS: Early Childhood Education: Ready to Read, Ready to Learn From: "Classroom Connect -- Connected Teacher" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tue, 30 Apr 2002 16:31:08 -0700 Subject: EDNEWS: Early Childhood Education: Ready to Read, Ready to Learn May Satellite Town Meeting "Early Childhood Education: Ready to Read, Ready to Learn" Tuesday, May 21, 2002 - 8:00 - 9:00 pm Eastern "We all have a duty to call attention to the science and seriousness of early childhood cognitive development - because the ages between birth and age five are the foundation upon which successful lives are built." - First Lady Laura Bush Description *************** Children enter the world with many needs in order to grow: love, nutrition, health, social and emotional security, and stimulation in the important skills that prepare them for school success. Children also enter the world with a great capacity to learn. Current research tells us that the first five years of life are key to a childīs long-term development. When young children are provided an environment rich in language and literacy interactions and full of opportunities to listen to and use language constantly, they can begin to acquire the essential building blocks for learning how to read. Regardless of ethnic background or socioeconomic status, children who have sound early care and rich learning activities do better in school and in life. Today, young children receive care from a wide variety of arrangements - about 62 percent receive care from non-parental relatives, non-relatives, and center-based programs. Yet, despite significant state and Federal resources, not all children have access to high-quality childcare. However, through extensive partnerships, communities and school districts around the country are creating comprehensive early childhood programs to ensure that all children are prepared to learn. These programs align what children are doing before they enter school, to what is expected of them once they are in school. Because, if a child enters school without essential cognitive skills, he or she runs a significant risk of starting behind and staying behind. During the May Satellite Town Meeting Under Secretary Hickok and his guests will explore the following questions and challenges: *In what ways can communities ensure that all children are given the opportunity to learn the fundamental skills needed to be successful in school? *What do effective preschool and early literacy programs look like? *What resources are available for early childhood teachers, parents, grandparents, and child care providers on ways to prepare children to be successful in school? *What does the medical community tell us about the latest research on brain development and its ties to early learning? *How can early childhood programs meet the needs of all students despite drastic preparation levels? *In what ways does poverty affect the childrenīs acquisition of pre-reading skills?
