viewing animals in the infrared, we can actually 'see' the differences
between warm and cold-blooded animals. Infrared also allows us to study
how well feathers, fur and blubber insulate animals. As you tour this
'Infrared Zoo', see what new information you can gather about the animals here
that you would not get from a visible light picture."

There is now a new Software Donations Resource on the Association of
Christian Community Computer Centers website. In addition to the commonly
known resources, we've also done quite a bit of work identifying how to get
software donations directly from some of the smaller vendors and included
sample letters that were successful in getting donations.
Some of the donation request letters were written by Chris Tsang, who was a
CTCNet VISTA at our local center last year at the PREP Computer Center of
Bruce Wall Ministries. Through his work, we were able to identify many of
sources of software donations that were previously not well known among most
community technology centers.
A list of some of the software vendors available include the following:
Adobe, Autodesk, DigiDesign, Full Armor, Intuit, Knowledge Adventure,
Learning Company, Lotus, Macromedia, Microsoft, New Deal, PowerQuest,
Symantec and Voyetra
The link for the software donations page is:

Hope you find this useful.

Hello, everyone,

I'm sharing some preliminary information with you today regarding
web-based materials for an upcoming PBS series entitled "The Rise and
Fall of Jim Crow", which is scheduled to air in Fall, 2002.

As you will note in the announcement below, teachers are being hired to
help develop resources and curriculum for the site. Those who
contribute resources, lesson plans, etc., will be compensated. If you'd
like to be considered as a consultant, a pop-up window will open when
you log onto the web site, and you can fill out information at that
time. There also is a link on the pop-up window to subscribe to e-mail
announcements for the series.

If you'd like to consult, or if you'd like more information, contact
Kathy Honda directly.

(By the way: the series and resources accompanying it will be the focus
of our Social Studies forum set for May 22.)

Hello Teachers!

I am so proud to announce the launch of the www.jimcrowhistory.org web
site! The PBS four-part series, The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow, is set to
air this Fall, but hundreds of teachers all over the country have
already signed on in the last 5 months to create the beginning of what
we think will be the most extensive web site on the Jim Crow years on
the Net. This site is a work in progress, and will continue to be one
until the airdate. We are fortunate to have a synopsis of each of the
films written by the producer, Richard Wormser. The history themed
overviews in the history section are at once comprehensive and
accessible-teachers will definitely want to print out the pdf of these
essays for use in their classroom. Also, many of the images in the Image
Gallery have never before been published online, and they offer a look
at Jim Crow that is not commonly seen, or known. The geography section
offers a unique perspective of the United States, seen through various
levels- Jim Crow Lynchings, African American Colleges, Jim Crow laws
Outside the South. This is just a sampling of what is already on the
site---please take a look for yourself.

We are continuing to hire teachers to build content on the site. There
is a multitude of ways that you can contribute. Our most pressing needs
are:

Web Site Evaluations: Teachers offer their reviews of external web sites
dealing with issues related to Jim Crow. We have over 25 individual
topics already online, with several hundred web sites to recommend
already, and we want to include more!
Narratives: If you know a Jim Crow survivor who would like to share
his/her story with us, let us know! You'll get a fee for conducting the
interview. If it's your story you'd like to tell, all the better!

Lesson Plans: As content goes up, we need teachers to develop lessons on
how to use this unique content with students. A sampling of lessons are
online now, but so much of the core material is now in development that
lesson plans will be needed throughout the process of developing this
site. We are looking for teachers who can show others how to best
utilize this information in creative ways. Please also note that we are
offering an entire American Literature section that will connect some of
the best literature to the Jim Crow period.

Geography: Add to the map from your state- add a personal anecdote if
you are an alum from one of 88 African American-Colleges, add lynching
statistics to your state's map, add Jim Crow laws in your state. We will
also develop other layers of the map- Jim Crow and Gender, Jim Crow
People, Jim Crow Great Migration, Jim Crow Court Cases. We need people
to fill in the map with their research, so please contact us!
Getting the Word out: If you can submit our web site to your teacher
list-serves, more teachers can have access to the materials.

As always, teachers will be paid for all the work contributed.

Look for updates every month on new material on this site!

I'm looking forward to working with you.

Best,

Kathy Honda
Education Coordinator
