I have a set of Microsoft Office 2000 tutorials designed specifically for teachers. The tutorials (in PDF format) can be downloaded free of charge at http://www.pitt.edu/~poole/Officeindex2.html. Teachers will need the work files that accompany the tutorials and I will be happy to send them on request. The website above has a set of directions for setting up the work disks (3.5" 1.4 mbyte floppies). I use these tutorials with my students (pre-service teachers) in order to ensure that they all graduate competent in the use of the full range of productivity software that they are likely to find available to them and their future students in the schools. I am working with Lorrie Jackson and Beckie Randall to develop an extended set of tutorials for teachers for Office XP. These will be available by the end of July at http://www.pitt.edu/~poole/OfficeXPindex2.html. Anyone interested in using the Office 2000 tutorials should feel free to contact me anytime so that I can e-mail the work files. I got a few requests to share the suggestions and advice I recieved back to the list. Helpful sites for ideas on activities that could be done: http://internet4classrooms.com/math.htm http://www.internet4classrooms.com/math_gen.htm http://www.internet4classrooms.com/math_elem.htm http://www.funbrain.com/kidscenter.html http://www.aplusmath.com/ http://www.scienceacademy.com/BI/index.html http://www.nctm.org/about/wlme Most of the activities are web based games but can be created as concrete games and modified as needed. Just starting points for ideas up to your imagination what you can create. Also have a look at your school's and local libraries math resources by seeing what you have already got might give you some more ideas for activities and this way you don't have to spend as much on materials. Other suggestions and advice: -Graphing using excel and using M&M's. -Using a certain theme for the night and creating each booth based on that one theme. *Sports - everyone come dressed in their favorite team sports clothes (Depending on season and sport) *Wild Western - always a fun theme to do *Seasons - depending on the season; summer theme the beach, winter the snow etc. *Space - have the planets as your stations with numerous activities on each. *Anything that interests the students or better still ask the students for suggestions for themes they would like. -Each booth is based on one theme. -Using manipulatives. -Keeping the activities simple so that they can be done with large amounts of people with minimal explanation and/or description. -Remembering to keep to your purpose and aim of activity as well as making them fun and interesting. -Getting the teachers from the grades you are aiming at to create the activities/develop. -Using the book Family Math by Stenmark, Thompson, & Cossey. -Think about how you are going to form the groups and how are they going to be rotated. -Start with an ice breaker so everyone gets to know each other. -Keeping the activities in context with classroom work and home life, so it is familiar to the students and not totally unrelated.
